Chiques History Note #12 – Rachel Murguia Wong

Chiques History Notes is a series of posts based on my research on Oxnard, CA.

“Ms. Murguia Wong (still living) was a long-time Ventura County resident who advocated on behalf of school children as an Oxnard resident in the late 1960s and ’70s. She served on many appointed local and county committees and boards and was elected to the Oxnard School District’s board of trustees in 1971. Trustee Murguia Wong spearheaded the district’s compliance with the federally court ordered desegregation of Oxnard’s K-8 schools. She is an unsung hero of Ventura County.”

¡Viva MiLB! Road Trip 2019

NOTE: We finished our MiLB road trip before the Fresno Grizzlies issue. I’m glad the organization apologized, especially if they continue to participate in the Copa de la Diversión. COPA is a MiLB initiative to engage, embrace, and honor the Latina/a/x communities across the baseball landscape.

We just finished our first tour (7 weeks) of Minor League Baseball (MiLB) teams and stadiums in the Midwest. The teams play in following levels,  International League (Triple-A), Eastern League (Double-A), and Midwest League (Class A). Also, we had the opportunity to see the up-and-coming talent of Latino/x ballplayers from Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Cuba, and Puerto Rico as they move up the levels to the majors

My partner and I attended the following games:

SATURDAY, APRIL 13, 2019: FIFTH THIRD BALLPARK

West Michigan Whitecaps vs. Great Lakes Loons (Score: 1-10)

SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 2019: CANAL PARK

Akron Rubberducks vs. Bowie Baysox (Score: 1-0)

SATURDAY, MAY 4, 2019: COOLEY LAW SCHOOL STADIUM

Lansing Lugnuts vs. Beloit Snappers (Score: 1-2)

SATURDAY, MAY 11, 2019: FIFTH THIRD FIELD

Dayton Dragons vs. Burlington Bees (Score: 1-4)

SATURDAY, MAY 18, 2019: PARKVIEW FIELD

Fort Wayne Tincaps vs. Lansing Lugnuts (Score: 1-7)

SATURDAY, MAY 25, 2019: HUNTINGTON PARK

Columbus Clippers vs. Indianapolis Indians (Score: 15-9)
